Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley is one of my favorites from the American Revolution.

I’m drawn to her as a writer. We know that thousands of Americans turned away from being loyal to the king and toward becoming a patriot to the United States of America.

Phillis also changed. We can see this transformation in her poems. She dedicated a poem to King George III in 1768. But by 1775, she had written a poem about freedom and George Washington. By this time, Phillis had received her freedom from slavery.

After sending her poem to General Washington, Phillis received a letter of thanks for him in late February 1776. This poem shows her complete transformation into a patriot.
